How to Choose EMS Recertification in 7 Simple Steps

Choose an EMS recertification course for your EMR, EMT, or paramedic certification level by checking its education acceptance, NCCP coverage, delivery format, documentation, and any separate skills requirements. CAPCE-accredited courses provide a recognized continuing education pathway, but accreditation alone does not establish that a package satisfies every requirement for your renewal.

MissionCIT provides EMS recertification education for working EMS providers. Use the following seven steps to evaluate a course before enrolling, with particular attention to the credits you still need and the requirements of your state and agency.

How to Select the Right EMS Recertification Course

Select your EMS recertification course by matching accepted education to your remaining requirements, rather than choosing by the advertised hour count alone.

1. Confirm Your Renewal Requirements

Check your National Registry account, your state EMS office requirements, and your agency’s education expectations before comparing courses. National certification and state authorization to practice are separate obligations.

National Registry continuing education requirements differ by certification level. EMRs, EMTs, and paramedics each divide their NCCP credits among national, local or state, and individual components.

Review credits already completed during your certification cycle so you do not purchase education that duplicates your existing coursework. Confirm your expiration date directly in your account rather than assuming every EMS level follows the same renewal deadline.

If you practice in multiple states, check each state’s renewal rules independently. Record any required topics, skills arrangements, and applicable deadlines.

2. Verify CAPCE Accreditation or State Acceptance

Prioritize courses with a documented, recognized education acceptance pathway. The National Registry accepts CAPCE-accredited education and education approved by a U.S. state EMS office or designated authorizing agency, among other accepted sources.

CAPCE stands for the Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education. Its accreditation provides an independent review framework for EMS continuing education. Review CAPCE’s accreditation role and ask the provider for the applicable accreditation or activity details.

An application for accreditation is not granted accreditation. Verify the status and scope rather than relying on a logo or a general marketing statement. Confirm state acceptance and required topics separately.

3. Match Course Content to NCCP Requirements

Compare the course syllabus with the national, local or state, and individual components you need to complete. A national-component refresher is different from a full recertification education package.

Use the National Registry EMS requirements applicable to your cycle as your reference. Ask for a breakdown showing credits by component and topic, including how required pediatric content is covered.

Check local requirements with your agency or state EMS office. A package containing local-component credits may still require supplementation if those credits do not address your specific mandated topics.

4. Choose a Format That Fits Your Schedule

Choose self-paced online, live online, or classroom instruction according to your schedule and learning needs. Self-paced education offers flexibility; scheduled instruction offers direct interaction at set times.

The National Registry does not limit the amount of online education used on a recertification application. That does not waive separate state rules or skills verification requirements.

For an online course, check access duration, completion conditions, and support availability. MissionCIT’s online refresher courses provide self-paced study, progress tracking, and downloadable completion certificates.

5. Check Skills Verification and CPR Arrangements

Arrange required skills verification separately from your continuing education plan. For active National Registry EMR and EMT renewal, your training officer or supervisor verifies skills competency. For paramedic renewal, your medical director approves skills verification. Completing online education alone does not replace that verification.

Check any additional skills or CPR requirements imposed by your state or employer. Ask whether your chosen package includes a CPR course or hands-on session, and identify anything you must arrange elsewhere.

Do not assume that a course described as a full refresher includes every administrative or practical requirement. Get a clear list of included services before enrolling.

6. Review Instruction Quality, Documentation, and Support

Evaluate a course’s learning objectives, clinical relevance, assessment requirements, and instructor qualifications. Look for content that explains patient assessment and decision-making at your certification level.

Ask for a sample completion certificate. It should clearly identify you, the course, completion date, awarded credits, issuer, and education approver. Ask how completions are reported and whether you must enter them manually in your National Registry account.

Confirm how to contact the provider when you have a content question or a documentation problem. A course should provide a clear route to assistance rather than leaving you to interpret missing information.

7. Compare the Complete Package

Compare packages based on accepted credits, required topic coverage, access conditions, documentation, and support. Include any separate CPR, skills, or supplemental education costs in your decision.

A national-component course can be appropriate if you already have local and individual credits. National-component requirements are 8 credits for EMRs, 20 for EMTs, and 30 for paramedics.

If you need all three components, compare packages against the full requirement for your level: 16 credits for EMRs, 40 for EMTs, or 60 for paramedics. Verify required topics as well as the total.
