NVFC Recruitment and Retention

The Challenge: Recruitment and Retention in Today’s Fire Departments

Recruitment and retention are critical challenges facing fire departments today. As the population ages and fewer individuals are inclined to become firefighters, maintaining adequate staffing levels has become increasingly difficult. Many departments struggle to attract new volunteers and keep existing ones engaged and committed. Addressing these challenges requires an updated, customized program that provides EMS and fire departments with the necessary tools and resources.

Firefighter Recruitment and Retention Workshops, Seminars & Courses

MissionCIT's Solution: A Comprehensive Two-Day Class. Our two-day class is a highly interactive program designed to foster ongoing discussions, class participation, group work, and critical conversations. The curriculum is divided into two focus areas: retention and recruitment.

Retention is a cornerstone of maintaining a robust fire department. Day 1 of our program focuses on key aspects of retention:

  2. Volunteer Service Timeline: Examining the lifecycle of a volunteer firefighter from recruitment to retirement, identifying key stages for intervention and support.
  3. Pathways & Barriers to Retention: Identifying common challenges and obstacles that lead to volunteer turnover and developing strategies to overcome them.
  4. Taking the Membership Temperature: Techniques for assessing the morale and satisfaction of your current volunteers to identify areas for improvement.
  5. Onboarding, T&D: Best practices for onboarding new recruits and providing ongoing training and development to keep them engaged and competent.
  6. Creating Cohesive Crews: Strategies for building strong, unified teams that work well together and support each other.
  7. Building Your Retention Plan: Developing a customized retention plan tailored to your department’s unique needs and circumstances.

Day 2: Enhancing Recruitment Efforts

Recruiting new volunteers is equally important. Day 2 is dedicated to enhancing your recruitment efforts:

  1. Pathways & Barriers to Recruitment: Understanding the challenges in attracting new volunteers and developing pathways to mitigate these barriers.
  2. Managing the Recruitment Process: Step-by-step guidance on managing a smooth and effective recruitment process from start to finish.
  3. Target Audience Development: Identifying and reaching out to potential volunteers who are most likely to be interested and committed.
  4. Recruitment Marketing: Utilizing modern marketing techniques and tools to promote your department and attract new volunteers.
