Excerpt from Paramedic Recert EMS Care | 23-MCIT-F3-4132 | EMS Research

Data collection and research are essential for creating defensible EBGs, which guide the performance of EMS systems. Following guidelines based on solid data and research helps improve coordination of patient care, enhance workforce training effectiveness, and promote better integration between prehospital and hospital systems.

In response to the IOM recommendation, the NEMSAC and the FICEMS formed a panel to examine existing methods for creating EBGs and propose their model for EBG development in the prehospital realm. This panel developed an eight-step model that provides a clear framework for creating EBGs.

Projects supported by NHTSA and the Emergency Medical Services for Children program demonstrate the implementation of EBGs. The FICEMS can further build upon these efforts to advance the maturity of EBGs.
