Excerpt Paramedic Recert EMS Care | 23-MCIT-F3-4110 | At Risk Population

The way a patient interacts with their partner can provide clues about an abusive relationship. If a patient looks to their partner before answering questions or if the partner answers on behalf of the patient and guides the conversation about the events leading to the injury, it should raise suspicions of abuse. This controlling behavior is expected in violent relationships. Respondents should trust their instincts in situations that may turn violent like any other call. One strategy to ask suspected victims of abuse questions is to separate them from the alleged abuser. This can be done by having other personnel interview the suspected abuser in a different room, moving the patient to the ambulance, or discreetly asking the police for assistance.
