Delirium:

Delirium is an abrupt disorientation of time and place that usually involves delusions and hallucinations.

Delusions are false beliefs. Hallucinations are the perception of sights, sounds, and other sensory phenomena that are not present.

Symptoms of delirium can vary based on an individual’s personality, the environment, and the seriousness of the illness. Common indicators encompass fluctuating attention, memory issues, disorientation, clouded consciousness, delusions, and vivid visual hallucinations. Delusions and hallucinations should be evaluated to see if they are promoting harm to the patient or others.

Treating delirium involves addressing the underlying physical disorder to alleviate anxiety and reduce associated mortality. In some cases, sedatives may be necessary for patient management. While the exact occurrence rate of delirium is uncertain, specific populations, such as older adults, children, burn patients, individuals who have undergone major heart surgery, those with a history of brain injury (e.g., stroke), and patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, are more prone to experiencing it.
