Officer Development Institute 26-MCIT-F3-3002 – Module 02 | No Nonsense Leadership: Part 2 of the No Nonsense Leadership is where we move from building a personal foundation to strengthening the team. There is no better place to start with than trust which is foundational to everything done at Fire service. This course discusses the different types of trust and practical ways to build that trust with the team.
Takeaways from this Module
- Own Tactical Mistakes with Humility: The fireground is complex, and crews forgive tactical errors. If you make a wrong call, immediately check your ego, admit it, explain what you would do differently, and move on to maintain respect.
- Rebuild Broken Trust Through Consistency: While tactical mistakes are easily overcome, character failures (like lying or manipulation) destroy trust instantly. Rebuilding it requires immediate ownership followed by months of consistent, transparent behavior.
- Strengthen Unit Cohesion and Resilience: Trust is the absolute foundation of the fire service. By practicing active appreciation, intentional training, and high-morale habits, you transition from an individual leader to a cohesive, resilient team.
Excerpt from Officer Development Institute 26-MCIT-F3-3002 – Module 02 | No Nonsense Leadership
You’re going to make mistakes as a fire officer. Nobody is perfect. The good news is, if everything you do is grounded in humility, you can regain trust if you lose it. Let’s talk about two types of trust-breaking situations. First, the easy ones to overcome: You make a mistake on a call. Maybe you made a tactical error or chose the wrong strategy. That’s actually relatively easy to overcome. You simply admit you were wrong, take ownership, explain what you should have done differently, and move on. Your crew understands that the fireground is complex and mistakes happen. But here’s what’s hard to recover from: If you lie, manipulate, don’t disclose information, or serve as a selfish officer, you will damage trust within your team, and it will be very hard to get back. If that happens, the number one thing you can do is own it. Admit your mistakes by telling your crew that you were wrong. Put your ego aside and commit to rebuilding that trust. But understand this – regaining trust might not happen overnight. It will start, of course, with saying you were wrong and demonstrating ownership, but there will have to be a pattern of consistent behavior in the weeks or even months following to build that trust back. You broke it fast, but you’re going to rebuild it slowly.
