The fire service is getting younger, and these firefighters want to know why they’re doing what they’re doing. Guess what? That is ok. The days of ‘because I said so’ are over. Be prepared to explain your reasoning in a way that fosters understanding and buy-in. For example, you can point and tell a firefighter to pull a hose line off the engine to a specific location.

But, if you take the time to say to them exactly why you want them to lay the hose out a particular way, and why moving the line this way is essential, they are more likely to reproduce that skill because you pour some substance behind it. Now they understand why they are doing something, not just how to do it.
