Patients require mechanical ventilation for diverse reasons that EMTs should understand. Respiratory failure occurs when patients cannot maintain adequate oxygenation or carbon dioxide removal independently. This can be hypoxemic known as low oxygen levels or hypercapnic which is elevated carbon dioxide in nature.
Airway protection becomes necessary when patients cannot protect their airway due to unconsciousness or neurological deficits that impair cough or swallow reflexes. Increased work of breathing leads to ventilator support when patients experience respiratory muscle fatigue or face increased ventilatory demands they cannot sustain. Chronic conditions requiring ventilation include neuromuscular disorders like ALS or muscular dystrophy, and spinal cord injuries affecting respiratory muscles. Acute scenarios necessitating ventilation include severe trauma, drug overdoses suppressing respiratory drive, pneumonia with respiratory failure, and post-cardiac arrest management.
