Excerpt from EMS Care EMT Chapter 24-MCIT-F3-2149 | Evidence-Based Guidelines
Different research questions require different study types. Case reports describe individual patient experiences, which are useful for rare conditions or unusual presentations. Cohort studies follow groups of patients over time, such as tracking the outcomes of cardiac arrest patients. Case-control studies look backward to find patterns, comparing what was different between patients with good versus poor outcomes. Randomized trials test specific treatments by randomly assigning patients to different groups. Each type has strengths and limitations. Understanding which type you’re reading helps you judge how to apply the findings.

Core Concepts & Takeaways
- Integrate the three core components of evidence-based practice (research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values) when making treatment decisions in the field.
- Evaluate medical literature critically by recognizing different study types, understanding basic statistics, and identifying potential biases that may affect the reliability of research findings
- Apply evidence-based protocols appropriately in various EMS scenarios while documenting the rationale for treatment decisions and any deviations from standard protocols
- Contribute to quality improvement processes by maintaining thorough documentation of patient outcomes, interventions, and objective findings to support future evidence-based improvements, and,
- Stay current with emerging trends and technological advancements in EMS research, adapting practice as new evidence becomes available.
