Bloodborne pathogens demand consistent use of PPE and safe practices during any contact with blood or body fluids.
Common Bloodborne Pathogens include:
Hepatitis B (HBV) – Highly infectious but preventable with vaccination. Ensure your vaccination is current.
Hepatitis C (HCV) – No vaccine available. Requires direct blood exposure.
HIV – Lower risk from occupational exposure but requires strict adherence to precautions.
Precautionary Measures are:
Double glove during trauma calls or heavy bleeding.
Use protective eyewear when there’s a risk of splashing.
Never recap needles — dispose of all sharps in approved containers immediately.
Follow PPE protocols even if vaccinated — vaccines reduce risk but don’t eliminate it.
After an Exposure:
Clean the site immediately.
Report the incident per your department’s exposure control protocol — know it by heart.
Vaccination Reminder: Many EMS services require certain vaccinations to work. If you’re not up to date, your agency should provide access to them.
The bottom line is that vaccines protect you, but PPE and proper technique are still your best defenses.
