Excerpt from EMS Care EMT Chapter 24-MCIT-F3-2145 | Hemorrhage Control
The fundamental mechanism behind all bleeding control is remarkably simple: pressure stops bleeding. This principle is the foundation for virtually every hemorrhage control technique in emergency medicine. When blood vessels are damaged, appropriate pressure creates conditions necessary for the body’s natural clotting processes to work.
Direct pressure compresses damaged vessels against underlying structures, reducing blood flow and allowing platelets to aggregate. Pressure dressings extend this effect while freeing the provider’s hands. Tourniquets apply circumferential pressure to completely occlude arterial blood flow to an extremity.
Understanding this core principle guides effective intervention in high-stress emergencies. Regardless of bleeding severity or technique, adequate pressure in the right location remains the critical factor in achieving hemostasis.
Core Concepts & Takeaways
- Identify different types of bleeding (arterial, venous, and capillary) and assess which require immediate intervention.
- Apply direct pressure and pressure dressings to control moderate bleeding effectively.
- Properly apply tourniquets for life-threatening extremity hemorrhage and document application time.
- Perform wound packing techniques for junctional hemorrhage in areas where tourniquets cannot be used.
- Monitor patients for signs of shock and adapt hemorrhage control techniques based on patient response and special populations.
