When it comes to emergency decontamination, the main goal is to address immediate life threats. The basic approach is to strip, flush, and cover. Start by removing contaminated clothing, as it can hold up to 85% of contaminants. Then, use plenty of water to flush away the remaining contaminants. Keep in mind weather conditions and the risk of hypothermia, but don’t wait for the perfect setup if patients need immediate decontamination. Some decontamination is better than none in life-threatening situations. This type of decontamination is quick and dirty – get the most off as quickly and as safely as possible to provide life-saving care. Once the initial life threats have been managed, you can perform a more technical and in-depth decontamination.

When dealing with mass decontamination, the goal is to quickly handle large numbers of patients. Set up multiple corridors to keep things moving efficiently. It’s important to consider gender separation and privacy and plan for special populations like children, the elderly, and those with disabilities. You’ll need to manage resources carefully since you’ll be using a lot of water and supplies. Remember, speed and simplicity are key in these situations. Ideally, you want to set up an assembly line for contaminated patients to go through. This is the quickest and most efficient way to get everyone decontaminated.
