An excerpt from the course EMS Care EMT Chapter 24-MCIT-F3-2138 | Lifting And Moving Patients
There are several techniques for one-person lifts and moves, each suited to specific situations.
The shoulder drag is helpful for quickly moving a patient short distances, particularly in emergencies like removing a patient from a burning vehicle. To perform this, reach under the patient’s armpits, grasp their forearms, and drag them as you walk backwards. Make sure you pull the patient in the direction of the long axis of the body.
The blanket drag can help move patients across smooth surfaces with less friction. Place the patient on a blanket and pull.
The extremity lift is for conscious patients who can assist somewhat. Here, you support the patient under their knees and shoulders.
The clothes drag can be used in emergencies but risks injuring the patient and should be a last resort.
Remember, these techniques are for urgent situations when you can’t wait for assistance. Whenever possible, use two-person techniques for safer lifts.
