A thorough inspection of the chest provides valuable information. Observe chest wall movement for symmetry, ensuring both sides of the chest rise and fall equally. This helps identify potential flail segments, where a portion of the chest wall moves paradoxically. Assess the patient’s breathing pattern, noting the rate and depth of respirations. Tachypnea, or rapid breathing, may indicate underlying respiratory distress. Observe for any visible injuries, such as open chest wounds, sucking chest wounds, bruising, or deformities of the chest wall. Evaluate the patient’s skin color and assess for adequate tissue perfusion. Observe for signs of respiratory distress, such as using accessory muscles such as the neck, shoulder, and abdominal muscles to aid breathing. This indicates increased breathing work and may suggest underlying lung injury. These observations, combined with other assessment findings, will help identify potential chest injuries, such as rib fractures, pneumothorax, or hemothorax, and guide further assessment and treatment.
