Begin every facial injury assessment by prioritizing airway evaluation. Blood, broken teeth, or tissue swelling can quickly compromise the airway. Assess the patient’s breathing pattern, noting any signs of respiratory distress, such as noisy breathing, use of accessory muscles, or cyanosis.

Next, evaluate the patient’s circulation. Due to the region’s rich blood supply, facial injuries often involve significant bleeding. Control bleeding with direct pressure and consider using pressure dressings or tourniquets if necessary. Monitor vital signs, including pulse rate, blood pressure, and skin color, to assess circulatory status.

Finally, assess the patient’s mental status using the AVPOO scale. If the mechanism of injury suggests potential cervical spine injury, take appropriate precautions to immobilize the spine.

Remember to fully expose the injured area to facilitate a thorough assessment. However, always maintain patient dignity and privacy by covering exposed areas with a sheet or blanket when possible.
