Both substance use and PTSD can cause or complicate medical conditions. Complete a thorough medical assessment to make sure you do not miss anything. Consider effects of chronic substance use on presentation, such as an addictive effect or a weakened effect. Watch for medication interactions. Monitor vital signs closely. Document all medical findings and interventions.

Multiple resources exist for substance use and trauma treatment. Know the local treatment facilities and admission criteria, making the patient aware of this will put them at ease. Let them know of the steps that the facility will take to make sure the patient is safe and will get the help they need.
