If there’s a chance that you’ll be called upon to perform a delivery as an EMR, here are the steps:

• If the baby’s head is seen at the vaginal opening (crowning), delivery will occur soon
• Someone should be by the mother’s head for support
• Wash your hands and put on the PPE
• Support the baby’s head as it delivers
• If umbilical cord is around the baby’s neck, slip it gently over the head
• Support the baby as he or she rotates
• The upper shoulder should deliver next as the head is guided downward
• The feet should deliver after that
• Keep the head lowered so fluids can drain; suction mouth and nose
• Make note of the birth time
• Keep the baby at the level of the birth canal
• Clamp the cord, cut only if sterile equipment is available
• Monitor the ABC’s
• Wait for the afterbirth delivery
