An Excerpt from the course on Psychiatric & Behavioral Emergencies

A mental status examination or MSE, is an evaluation tool that can help during the patient assessment. Many variations of MSEs are available and all of them include an assessment of appearance and behavior, speech and language, cognitive abilities, and emotional stability.

While assessing Appearance and behavior, points to look out for are:

How does the patient look? Is the person neatly dressed and well groomed?

Is the patient pleasant and cooperative, or agitated?

Is the patient’s behavior appropriate for the situation?

What is the patient’s body language?

Do body movements or posture suggest tension, anxiety, hostility, or aggression?

Does the patient maintain eye contact during the patient interview?

Regarding Speech and language, the following need to be checked:

Is the patient’s speech intelligible and normal in tone, volume, and rate?

Does the tone of the patient’s voice change?

Is speech spontaneous, with ease of expression?

Do the patient’s words and sentences proceed in an orderly fashion?
