An Excerpt from the course on Pathophysiology and Shock

Hypoventilation can be caused due to different reasons.

The obstruction in the airways can be caused by unconsciousness or an altered state of consciousness. It can also be caused by a medical condition or disease such as bronchitis, emphysema, COPD, or cystic fibrosis; or it could be the result of environmental factors such as pollution or allergies.

Overconsumption of alcohol, barbiturates, sleeping pills, and certain medicines can lead to narrow airways.

Other medical conditions and injuries that cause physical abnormalities of the chest wall or the lungs can also lead to hypoventilation.

Hypoventilation can also be caused by brain trauma, neuromuscular disorders and growths that affect respiration or by poisoning and overdosing on medication.
