Ventilator alarms can be categorized into three main groups: power-related, circuit-related, and patient-related. Power alarms include low battery warnings, which indicate limited remaining operation time; power disconnection alarms, which alert you that the unit has switched to battery power; and power failure alarms, which indicate complete power loss is imminent. Circuit alarms include high pressure or resistance alerts, which often indicate obstruction in the tubing or patient airway; low pressure or disconnect alarms, which typically mean a connection has separated; and oxygen supply issues, which warn of problems with the oxygen source. Patient-related alarms include breathing pattern mismatches, where the patient’s own breathing efforts conflict with the ventilator’s delivered breaths; apnea detection, indicating the patient has stopped triggering breaths; and volume or pressure limit alarms, which activate when preset safety thresholds are exceeded. As an EMR, you don’t need to respond to all these alarms independently, but recognizing their general category helps you communicate effectively with higher-level providers and identify potential simple solutions within your scope. EMRs who can accurately describe the specific alarm type help the responding ALS crew prepare appropriate interventions before arrival.
