Excerpt from Paramedic Recert EMS Care | 23-MCIT-F3-4131 | Crew Resource Management

CRM recognizes that effective teamwork and communication are fundamental to ensuring safety and achieving optimal outcomes in complex and dynamic situations. These are called the five guiding principles of CRM. These emphasize the importance of:

  • Communication: Encouraging open and honest communication among team members, ensuring critical information is shared clearly and effectively. This includes active listening and the ability to speak up when necessary.
  • Situational Awareness: Maintaining a clear understanding of the current situation, including the patient’s condition, the environment, and the team’s actions. This enables timely decision-making and appropriate responses to changing circumstances.
  • Decision-Making: Promoting collaborative decision-making, where input from all team members is valued and considered when making critical decisions. CRM discourages top-down or authoritarian decision-making in favor of a shared decision-making process.
  • Teamwork: Fostering a culture of collaboration and mutual respect among crew members. This includes recognizing and valuing each team member’s unique skills and perspectives while working together toward common goals.
  • Adaptability: Acknowledging that situations can change rapidly, and plans may need to be adjusted accordingly. CRM encourages flexibility and the ability to adapt to unexpected challenges.
  • Workload or task management: a system influential leaders use to delegate or divide tasks among a team so no team member becomes oversaturated.
