Cromwell FD | Assistant Chief Operations

Definition: 

This administrative and technical position is part of the department’s senior management team. It involves management and supervision in accordance with the department chain of command. This position reports directly to the Fire Chief.

Duties: 

Works under the supervision of the Fire Chief, plans and directs the day-to-day fire and EMS operations of all personnel.  Exercises command and supervisory control over all full time, part-time, and volunteer staff during all emergency scene operations as assigned.  Assumes operational responsibilities of the department in the absence of the Fire Chief.

Hours & Days of Week

  • Average 30 Hour work week.
  • Days of Week and Times worked are flexible, with the approval of the fire chief.
  • Generally during business hours Monday – Friday. 
  • Nights, weekends, and holidays are occasionally required for meetings, training, and callbacks.

Compensation

  • Pay is fixed at an annual salary of $62,400, currently paid on a weekly basis.
  • Salary is based upon an average 30-hour work week at $40 per hour. 
  • Pension:  Available

  • Vehicle: Will have a take home vehicle

What’s Next – Prepare for Testing

  • Assuming your credentials are in order, you will be invited via email and/or phone to sit for the test
  • Test Dates:  Written: February 7, 2023 – 9:00a-11:00a |  Oral: February 9, 2023 – a one (1) hour slot between 8a & 3p
  • Test Location:  Coles Road Fire Station, Cromwell CT
  • The written exam will be delivered via computer – you will be provided a Practice Exam with instructions, at minimum five (5) business days before the test to become comfortable with the technology. Computers will be provided, set up and ready to go when you arrive at the test.  The written exam will consist of 100 multiple choice questions from the
    reference manuals and chapters referenced. You will have two (2) hours to take the test.
  • Reading Material: Company Officer by IFSTA, 6th Ed- Chapters 12-16, Structural Firefighting: Initial Response Strategies and Tactics by IFSTA, 2nd Ed – Chapters 3-6, Hazardous Materials for First Responders, by IFSTA 6th Ed – Chapters 4-9
