Safety and health laws, Codes, Regulations, and Standards is the second chapter in the HSO series. This deals laws, codes, regulations, and standards applicable to the role as an Health and Safety Officer

The Objectives of the course

To learn about laws, codes, regulations, and standards applicable to their role as an HSO and how to recognize federal, state, and provincial laws, codes, and regulations to which they must adhere. Additionally, they can identify national standards relevant to their roles.

To perform their job effectively, the HSO must be able to distinguish between laws, codes, regulations, and standards and how they impact fire department operations. The HSO is responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable national, state, and local laws, codes, regulations, and standards in the following areas:

  • Developing ESSOPEES or ESSOGEES
  • Developing corrective actions
  • Creating a safe work environment
  • Investigating accidents
  • Reporting accidents and injuries
  • Analyzing an incident
  • Conducting facility inspections
  • Distributing safety and health information
  • Recommending safety-related fire apparatus, equipment, and protective clothing and equipment specifications
  • Developing incident risk management plan
  • Managing a health maintenance program
  • Establishing an occupational safety and health committee
  • Reporting bloodborne pathogens and exposures
